Why is Accelplus involved in telecommunications?

Municipal governments have traditionally provided basic infrastructure services that would be difficult or too expensive for the private sector to provide. Examples are roads, parks, airports, culinary water and wastewater systems, and garbage services. Over 2,000 communities, like Crawfordsville, have their own electrical systems. Some 400 cities across the nation are also making available telecommunications services.

The City of Crawfordsville, through CEL&P has established a separate telecommunication division, known as Accelplus. In today’s telecommunications world, infrastructure is as important as highways and water systems to the economic success of a city’s businesses and families. Through Accelplus, the city can provide the basic infrastructure and systems required to supply advanced data and video services. This will ensure that citizens and businesses have the benefits and economic opportunities of these advanced services today.

How did it all get started?

CEL&P has been a success for many decades, providing stable and cost-effective electrical services. It was natural to begin discussing telecommunications needs as it became apparent in the late 1990’s that telecommunications services would become crucial to the city’s economic well-being. CEL&P has proceeded slowly and carefully with public input and openness. A respected consultant was hired to do a feasibility study, which concluded the city could be successful in developing a state-of-the-art telecommunications network. The Utility Service Board reviewed the opportunities and risks and unanimously voted to proceed.

What are you offering?

Accelplus will be offering over 200 all digital channels, pay per view, video on demand & High Speed Internet.

When will the services be available?

Accelplus is currently available for customers in certain areas with the build out for the entire service area lasting 18 months.

Where will the first build out areas be located?

The first build out areas are on the north and west sides of Crawfordsville.
